THE
SPINNING FLYWHEEL |
|
|
The Flywheel is Beginning to
Spin! by Skip
Hansen, IBC Director of Transition
Monday
night, March 2, 2009, the Minnesota Board of
Stewards voted unanimously to approve the
forward movement of next steps toward a
merger with the Iowa Baptist Conference!
Praise God! That is great news!
Over the past month, while we have been
awaiting that vote, and without presuming
its outcome, your IBC Transition Team
members have been faithfully and quietly at
work. Discussion regarding a number of
topics has been taking place:
TYPE OF MERGER: Everyone
is interested in what type of "merger" would
take place. Under the guidance of
experienced legal advice and counsel, the
Transition Team members considered three
types of mergers.
Right now, it is being
suggested that one type is the most
financially and organizationally efficient
for all parties involved... and thereby
makes the most amount of common sense--a
full merger.
Such a merger would involve
transferring the existing assets and
liabilities of the Iowa Baptist Conference
to the existing Minnesota Baptist
Conference. Although under the umbrella of
the MBC, the IBC would continue to exist as
a legal entity. The newly combined group
would adopt a new name, and together make
its decisions regarding a list of important
topics. (See below.) |
|
|
|
POTENTIAL TIMELINE:
Everyone is interested in the potential
timeline. Right now, it is being suggested that
the series of votes already planned in Iowa be
extended to both districts. Such a series would
allow both parties to fulfill certain legal
responsibilities, as well as to provide legal
options for both parties.
- May 2009 - IBC's delegate
vote would be: Whether (or not) to continue the
merger process in light of facts known by that
date-a fuzzy picture!
- November 2009 - The
Transition Team will have completed the final
focused picture, and presented it before both
district's constituents. After review of that
final picture.
- Both Minnesota & Iowa delegates would
vote____... as to whether or not to send out
a "notice of intent" to merge in early
2010.
- Early 2010 - Each district
would exercise its final vote (whether or not to
"ratify" its previously expressed intent
(November,) or to exercise its legal
"abandonment of merger" option, and step away
from the process.
APPORTIONMENT:
Everyone is interested in how the Iowa churches
might be represented on the Board of Stewards in
a larger district.
Right now, (based on number of churches, as well
as a rough estimate of total statewide
attendances,) it is being suggested that
something along the lines of 1:4.5-1:5 board
representation might be a reasonable
apportionment. In other words... the current
IBC churches would have 20-25% of the combined
Minnesota-Iowa Board membership.
IMPORTANT TOPICS... (BUT
NON-ESSENTIALS): Every reader
has topics of special interest to themselves and
others. While such topics may be important,
they may be deemed as "not essential" to
completing the current process of merger.
Right now a potential list of such items
(topics) is being formulated. Once the merger
is complete these topics will be addressed by
the new group. Until then, it is being
suggested that the following topics be assigned
to a "holding" category. Additional topics may
be added later:
- Any changes to the existing governance
structure. The current Minnesota governance
structure will be continued (but expanded to
include apportioned representation of Iowa
churches.)
- Any permanent district name change. The
"working" name will be "Minnesota-Iowa Baptist
Conference."
- Any immediate staffing changes in Iowa.
As you can see the flywheel really IS beginning
to spin! Brace yourself! Over the next few months
it is only going to pick up even more speed! |

WINTER RETREATS AT PINE LAKE |
|
One Youth Pastor's Feedback...
We had a great time! The guy's were really thinking
and getting into discussion about the topic. I had
one guy say, "Hey, this is cool. We could talk
like this at small group at church!"
I think we are going to have a good group of kids
back for summer camp because of the good time they
had this weekend!
Thanks Roger and all the team that pulled this off.
Chris, awesome!
Could you come do the speaking at my youth group?
God worked powerfully through your words. Not
just in the kids, but many of us adults got some
good calibration reality from your messages! |
