a NEW thing!
What is "The Spirit saying to the churches?..."

by Skip Hansena NEW thing! - Transition Year

As we seek permission to embark on the journey called a NEW thing!, it is crucial that everyone understands, and that everyone be assured that the heart, root and soul of our effort is to simply to DISCOVER -- what is the Spirit saying to the churches.

That is the underlying theme of the Revelation 2-3 churches -- churches beloved by Christ, yet in need of continued transformation: "He who has ears... let him give ear to what the Spirit says to the churches."

I pledge to you this will be the underlying theme of our effort if our conference affirms our board recommendation to move forward together on a NEW thing!

What IS "The Spirit saying to the churches?..."

THE SURVEYS SAID...

To "prime the pump" of our early discussions... we've sent out some early surveys.  Approximately 50 IBC'ers responded to our first survey seeking fresh ideas for IBC's future!  We challenged our folks to come up with what they thought were both "inside" and "outside the box" ideas.  We are beginning the process of "mining" the data.  You can check it out yourself at www.iowabgc.org.

In the second survey, which is underway right now, we are asking IBC pastors and leaders to tell us what they want to preserve, achieve and avoid as they look ahead!

We are listening.  What is "The Spirit saying to the churches?..."

LEAD TEAMS ARE TALKING...

The surveys are generating a lot of discussion, clarifications, and wisdom sharing among the pastors who participate in their regional LEAD teams.  Questions are being asked and answered.  New ideas are being generated and refined.  And our overall message is being sharpened.

We are listening.  What is "The Spirit saying to the churches?..."

REGIONAL TOWN HALL MEETINGS ARE SCHEDULED...

Six regional opportunities for face-to-face discussion are scheduled for:

1. March 13, 7:00 pm at First Baptist Church, Kiron
2. March 15, 6:00 pm at Grandview Baptist Church, Davenport
3. March 29, 6:00 pm at Grace Baptist Church, Waterloo
4. April 5, 6:00 pm at First Baptist Church, Algona
5. April 12, 6:00 pm at The River Community, Iowa City
6. April 26, 6:30 pm at Union Park Baptist Church, Des Moines (tentative)

Once again... more opportunities to hear what "The Spirit is saying to the churches."

PASTORS... YOU ARE INVITED TO CALL ME!

Yesterday, at the Prayer First Conference in Sioux Falls, I was talking with Pastor Dave Koenigsberg (Senior Pastor @ Hampton).  He suggested that there may be other IBC pastors/lay leaders who would benefit from a more personal, or more extended time, to discuss a NEW thing!   Good idea!

Consider this your invitation!  Anyone who would like to have a personal one-on-one discussion about a NEW thing!... call me.  I'd be happy to schedule a time to meet!

WE ARE NOT ALONE!

The Spirit has already told us, "There is wisdom in many counselors."  (Proverbs 15:22)  God has given many great benefits to IBC through close relationships with highly skilled and spiritually gifted people!

In addition to BGC President Jerry Sheveland, neighboring District Executive Ministers Bernie Tanis (Mid America,) Dr. Dwight Perry (Great Lakes,) Larry Odle (Heartland,) and newly appointed Dan Carlson (Minnesota), have eagerly offered to lend strength to our processes in the months ahead.

BGC Executive Vice President, Director of Mobilization, Ray Swatkowski, has offered to guide our district leadership through a SWOT analysis at the appropriate time in our process.  This exercise will help us identify our Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats.

Jim Spickelmier, Associate Vice President of Seminary Development at Bethel University, recently shared with me some of the crucial lessons they learned during the first failed attempt to unify the New England and Mid-Atlantic districts.  Later efforts resulted in the formation of the Northeast District that exists today!

Next week, Al Magnuson, the former DEM during the formation of the Heartland District, will be sharing with me some lessons they learned during the union of the Nebraska and Dakotas district.

NOTE: Although I want you to be aware of conversations I'm having, be careful not to jump to conclusions.  Such consultations are an important part of our "due diligence" process, and should not be interpreted as to imply any inclination toward any specific course our future may take.

You might look at it this way: what has "The Spirit already said to the churches?..."

KEY QUESTIONS:

I'm sure my thinking will continue to develop and refine.  But early on, as I'm formulating my personal thoughts, I'm thinking that any outcome we choose to present for consideration by the conference a year from now should pass through the following "grid":

  1. Will our chosen outcome first and foremost best "magnify" God.  That is... will it actively demonstrate His greatness?
  2. Will our chosen outcome serve our churches best. That is... will it actively provide best avenues for helping churches become all that God wants them to become?
  3. Will our chosen outcome best reflect the Spirit-led will of those IBC partners whose credible commitment to our future mission has already been demonstrated through faithful support of and active participation in our current mission together?

ONE PASTOR'S RESPONSE TO "a NEW thing!"

In a recent church newsletter, Pastor Rod Ankrom of First Baptist, New Hampton, wrote the following words of encouragement to his congregation:Pastor Rod Ankrom, New Hampton
We do not know all the details of how God is going to move across our district over the next 18 months, but we will be invited to be a part of the process of helping make a determination in investigating, pursuing and determining the best course of action for the IBC.  There will be regional town hall meetings and you can access any updated information at the IBC website (www.iowabgc.com).

The goal is to have a new proposed strategic alliance presented for delegate vote at the 2009 IBC Annual Meeting.  While this seems like a long time from now, it will take considerable time and research to determine the best option for us and then communicate this to 40 different churches.

For right now, the word picture for us is that of a wedding.  As your daughter walks down the aisle, you know that your relationship and the way you used to relate to her is going to be changed -- but the good news is that you gain a son-in-law (and potential grandchildren!)

On balance, the positives far outweigh the negatives.  The work that we are doing together in the district is so significant that we must find a way to continue to do it; and while it will not be exactly the same, we are hoping that in some respects, it will be even better and ultimately stronger than ever!
GOIN' ON A LION HUNT!
Invitation to 2008 Summer Camps... by Roger Sutton, Camp Director2008 Summer Camps

It's 9:30 pm.  There's no moon.  It's pretty dark at Pine Lake Christian Camp.  We take a walk across the camp up to the ropes course.  No flashlights.  All of a sudden we hear the most ferocious roar of a lion.  What do we do?  Fight or flight are the options.  Maybe many of us will freeze in fear or even faint.

I Peter 5:8 tells us that Satan roams around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.  How often in our life, does Satan simply have to roar to keep us from doing what God wants us to do or be who He wants us to be?  Rev. 5:5 talks about the great Lion of Judah, the One who can open the scrolls, the Almighty One, the Loving One, the Savior who died for us.  He's the one we should be walking beside.  He has all the power.

Our theme this summer is "Goin' on a Lion Hunt."  We are going to help our campers understand the reality of the roaring one we don't have to fear and the love of the powerful Great Lion of Judah.

And... as we face the unknown future of the ministry of the IBC, let's not give in to the roars of the devouring one, the one who wants us to believe that we can't possibly do or be what God would want for us.  Join us in this lion hunt... right now... by being a part of the team that faces the giant, crosses the Red Sea on dry land, and sees the walls of Jericho fall.  Let's discover together the ministry that God desires for us to be a part in order to make an eternal difference in the communities and the state that we are responsible for.

Hope to see you soon, in your church, here at camp, the town hall meetings, the annual meeting... soon.

FACILITATING 180' LIFE CHANGE!
Teen Challenge... for people with life-controlling problems

Skip and I recently visited with Bob Schmidt, Community Relations Liaison for Teen Challenge of the Midlands.  Following is a brief introduction to this tremendously successful addictions' ministry:
Teen Challenge of the MidlandsThe cost to individuals, families, and society from drug and alcohol abuse is staggering!  It includes family break down and higher health care costs, incarceration and the cost of increased law enforcement and addiction programs.
Statistics have shown that most secular drug rehabilitation programs experience a cure rate of only 1-15% for their graduates.  Studies done over the years have shown that Teen Challenge has a success rate of 70-86% of their graduates--seven years after completion of treatment!

Teen Challenge is a Christian discipleship program helping people understand that God created them and desires a personal relationship with them.  This ministry was founded by David Wilkerson, (author of The Cross and the Switchblade), in 1958.  Today there are more than 150 Teen Challenge centers in the United States and 250 worldwide.
The purpose of Teen Challenge is to provide adults, 18 and over, with an effective and comprehensive Christian, faith-based, solution to life-controlling drug, alcohol, and other addiction problems in order to become mentally sound, emotionally balanced, socially adjusted, physically well, and spiritually alive.  In short... Teen Challenge is about radical, 180 degree life change!
